Summary

Austin, Texas, capital of the main oil-producing State in the USA, just endorsed the Fossil Fuel Treaty proposal and calls on President Biden to stop approving the unbridled expansion of fossil fuel projects.

We did it.

On June 8th, Austin just became the first city in Texas – or any conservative state – to endorse the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty. Alongside our grassroots partner Texas Campaign for the Environment, thousands of Stand.earth community members weighed in, sending letters to council and signing our petition that was delivered during the council meeting.

Local endorsements like this are a critical way to gain traction in the international arena, as is support from traditionally conservative areas historically dependent on fossil fuel production. This means that Austin’s voice will be an outsized voice in this movement to a better tomorrow.

Right now, support for a Fossil Fuel Treaty is at an all time high. In addition to Austin, multiple nations are now formally calling for a Treaty, and just last month the Senate of California – boasting the fifth largest economy in the world – formally called on world leaders to negotiate and ratify a global Fossil Fuel Treaty.

I’ll be honest – when the Treaty was just an idea on a piece of paper back in 2018, we weren’t sure we could make it happen. But now this is becoming real. Heads of state in the Pacific Islands, youth climate strikers in Europe, activists in Africa, elders from Indigenous tribes throughout the Americas, business leaders, and everyone in between all agree: the world needs a solution like the Fossil Fuel Treaty, and we’re not going to settle for anything less.

The Stand community is now 1 million people strong and growing, and is no stranger to taking on tasks that seem impossible and odds that seem insurmountable. Time and time again, we’ve proven that we can triumph over whatever obstacles massive corporations or corrupt governments put in front of us. And together, we’re going to achieve a global Fossil Fuel Treaty.
