In March 2020, Hayward joined the movement of California cities passing policies that require new buildings to be electric. They upgraded this policy to be more robust in November of 2022. In June of 2021, Hayward became one of the first cities in the US to officially commit to passing SAFE policies and endorse the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty.
