Mountain View, the hometown of Google and other tech giants, voted unanimously in support of a reach code that requires electrification for new residential and commercial buildings. Mountain View’s ordinance is robust; there are no exemptions for gas stoves, fireplaces, or fire pits in residential buildings, though there is a provision that makes it possible for restaurants to request an exemption. The city council also requested that staff come back in early 2020 with ordinance language to prevent wood fireplaces as an additional health and safety measure. Mountain View’s Reach Code is by far one of the strongest codes we’ve seen.
