Weigh in on future of gas stoves during public comment period

Published on May 2, 2023

Comments from the gas industry and its allies are already flooding the portal, and we need to fight back.

Tens of thousands of you spoke up about the dangers of gas stoves, and now the Consumer Product Safety Commission has opened a public comment period on what should be done about the gas stoves that are fueling childhood asthma and the climate crisis.

Despite pushback from the gas industry, our government felt enough pressure from people like you, and is now seriously considering taking steps to address this critical issue. This is a massive accomplishment, and we should all take a moment to soak in how this victory feels.

Aaaaand we’re back! Feeling better? I hope so – because we have work to do. Comments from the gas industry and its allies are already flooding the comment portal, and we need to fight back.

Sign onto the public comment that we’re submitting to end the sale of gas stoves and advocate all-electric ones in new buildings.

Much like the tobacco industry did when it was discovered how dangerous cigarettes are, the gas industry is doing everything they can to discredit what the science is saying and stop regulators from protecting people’s health. We can’t let the gas industry win.

Not only is gas a major driver of the climate crisis, but a recent peer-reviewed paper in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health found that gas stoves cause one in eight cases of childhood asthma.

What’s more, the alternative is so much better. Induction stoves heat water more quickly and pans more evenly, and are much easier to clean. They don’t spew emissions that cause asthma and cancer, nor do they directly contribute to the climate crisis. And because they run on electricity, they’re not subject to steep and sudden price spikes like gas appliances are.

The Stand.earth community now is more than 1 million people strong — and growing! Together, we’re using our collective power to fight climate change, protect wild spaces, stand with impacted communities, and say no to new fossil fuels.

As demonstrated by our work to get a public comment period initiated in the first place, we’re confident we can stand toe-to-toe with the gas industry in this fight to protect the climate and preserve people’s health.

Let’s get it done.
