Back in 2019, Brookline attempted to become the first city on the east coast to implement a building electrification policy, but was stopped by their state government. Undeterred, they passed an updated policy that achieves the same thing and they believe will hold up at the state level.
Brookline worked for years to have a building electrification policy, beginning in 2019 when their policy for all-electric new buildings and major renovations was stopped by the state. Brookline persevered and in 2022 they were allowed to apply for a new state pilot allowing local building electrification. In February of 2024 Brookline was able to enact their policy at last.
