This makes Calistoga the second city in the U.S. to adopt such a prohibition, after Petaluma in neighboring Sonoma County enacted the first in March 2021. Calistoga’s action shows the power local communities have in blocking fossil fuel expansion, and more cities in the Napa and Sonoma county region are in the process of adopting prohibitions on new gas stations.
Calistoga approved a citywide prohibition on construction of new gas stations in December 2021.
