Charlotte is electrifying its transit fleet, starting with a pilot project with 18 buses for the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) in early 2022 and moving to all zero-carbon energy sources for the fleet by 2030. The first 18 buses will be supplied by three different manufacturers so the City can decide which company’s buses perform best for its needs. Federal grants are helping pay for the buses and the electric utility is installing and paying for the charging infrastructure. The local group Sustain Charlotte has been advocating for this move to an all-electric transit fleet.
