Culver City has a huge amount of oil and gas wells located within city limits, many of which are close to homes and schools – including the massive Inglewood Oil Field. For years, residents organized to begin a phaseout of oil and gas extraction activity within city limits, in order to safeguard the health of their community. In September of 2020, the city council decided to explore ending urban oil drilling and begin the process of completing a phaseout, and in June of 2021 they officially voted to go through with the process. Then, in December of 2023, and agreement was reached with the oil company that operates the wells to have the phase completed by 2029. Some advocates lauded this deal, while other lamented it was three years later than the initial phase out legislation specified.
