Community members of Nanaimo spoke passionately about the need for all-electric buildings to tackle the significant greenhouse gas emissions that result from burning gas in our homes and businesses. Despite high-pressure opposition from FortisBC, Nanaimo councillors voted 5 to 4 in favour of the policy that will require new buildings to meet the highest performance standard outlined in the Zero Carbon Step Code as of July 1, 2024 and require all applicable Part 3 building types and occupancies meet the Step 3 of the Energy Step Code by January 1, 2026.
Nanaimo accelerates the phase out of gas and the transition to all-electric buildings.
