In 2019, Petaluma passed a temporary prohibition on new gas stations and declared a climate emergency. In spring of 2020 the prohition on new gas stations was extended until March 2021, and in February of 2021, Petaluma passed the first gas station prohibition in the United States. Then, in May of 2021, Petaluma passed an ordinance mandating all-electric construction in newly constructed buildings – a great example of how municipalities can pass additional SAFE policies as time goes on!
