On March 23, 2020, Santa Cruz become the 30th municipality in California restrict or ban fracked gas in new buildings. Their particular measure takes effect on any buildings built after July 1, 2020. In 2022, they passed an ambitious Climate Action Plan that explicitly calls to phase out fossil fuels, and in 2023 followed this up by passing a roadmap on how to electrify existing buildings.
