In 2019, Sebastopol passed a resolution which declared a climate emergency. In this resolution, the city recognizes potential policy solutions including building electrification and banning new fossil fuel infrastructure. Then, in April of 2022, Sebastopol became the 4th city in the U.S. to prevent the construction of new gas stations within city limits.
