Sønderborg is leading the way on creating sustainable, fossil fuel free communities by taking a multipoint municipal approach. Currently, all new building construction needs to be ZERO+ (meaning all new buildings produce their own energy and are self-sufficient). By 2029, the community is aiming to not only have a carbon-neutral transport system, but also a zero carbon community with a multi-renewable energy system supply based on local renewable (geothermal, biomass, biogas or solar), and offshore wind energy.
